EVs (Electric Vehicles) are no longer facing insurmountable technical challenges to mass rollout. Technical breakthroughs in recent years have allowed EV makers, energy suppliers and governmental organizations to move with considerable impetus towards making the electric-powered vehicle a reality.

There are strong growth potentials in the EV charging infrastructure market as well. Cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts that a total of 4.7 million such charge points will be installed worldwide during the period from 2010 to 2015.

In terms of connection to the grid, "the infrastructure can only be successful if the charging plugs and so on are standardized", says Van den Bossche, Secretary of IEC TC (Technical Committee) 69.
